BREAKING: Nigeria's ARCON Files Lawsuit Against Meta, Demands N30 Billion The Advertising
The Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has taken legal action against Meta Platforms Incorporated, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, along with its agent AT3 Resources Limited.
ARCON announced on Tuesday that it has initiated a lawsuit in the Federal High Court, Abuja, alleging that advertisements on Meta's social media platforms in Nigeria lack proper vetting and approval by the federal government.
According to ARCON, these unscreened ads and other content from Mark Zuckerberg's Meta are illegal and violate Nigerian advertising laws. In seeking punitive damages, ARCON is demanding N30 billion in compensation.
The statement released by ARCON is titled "ARCON Sues Meta Platforms Incorporated, Seeks N30 Billion in Sanctions and Penalties." The statement reads: "The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms Incorporated, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and its agent AT3 Resources Limited in the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division.
"ARCON is seeking a declaration that the continued publication of various advertisements targeting the Nigerian market on Facebook and Instagram by Meta Platforms Incorporated, without proper vetting and approval, is illegal, unlawful, and a violation of Nigerian advertising laws.
"ARCON claims that Meta Platforms Incorporated's ongoing publication of unvetted advertisements has also resulted in a loss of revenue for the Federal Government.
"ARCON is requesting N30 billion in sanctions for the violation of advertising laws and for the revenue loss caused by Meta Incorporated's continuous display of unapproved ads on its platforms.
"ARCON reaffirms its commitment to preventing unethical and irresponsible advertising in Nigeria's advertising space. "ARCON also clarifies that it is regulating advertising and marketing communications on online platforms, rather than the entire online media space, in accordance with its established mandate."
