Federal Government Allocates N315 Billion for New Worker Allowance, Averts Nationwide Strike
The Federal Government may incur an additional N315 billion in wage expenses over the next six months due to the introduction of a new allowance for federal workers.
Following President Bola Tinubu's announcement of a provisional wage increase for low-income workers, initially set at N25,000 for a specific category of federal workers for six months, the government expanded this increase to include all treasury-paid workers. This decision was made in order to prevent an imminent nationwide strike organized by labor unions.
After labor leaders raised objections to the initial N25,000 provisional wage increment for low-grade workers, the Federal Government opted to raise the wage award to N35,000.
This adjustment is expected to benefit approximately 1.5 million federal workers, providing them with a monthly palliative of N35,000. The intention behind this move is to alleviate the impact of the removal of subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit (commonly known as petrol) over a six-month period.
As a result, the Federal Government is projected to allocate N52.5 billion each month to cover the wage increase for 1.5 million federal workers. This totals N315 billion over the course of six months, with each civil servant receiving a total of N210,000 during this period.
